Confessions of a Human Sperm

R.S. Jeyendran, 2013(in press)

Throughout time man has wondered about where he really came from and how did he actually get here.  In fact, it is usually one of the first real questions that we get from our children “where did we come from?” What we really want to know is the building blocks, or should I say, for this story, to put it bluntly, the sperm!   Let’s shine the light on him shall we?  Instead of giving the egg all the credit as it always does, egg this and egg that-ugh.  What came first, the chicken or the egg?  Who cares!!  Without sperm you wouldn’t even have that question to ask, now would you?

Since I am merely a man, I thought it would be more apropos to go to the source and get to the real truth, and I will be only writing for him.  So, for that I found someone we can all relate to who will walk us through everything we need to know about sperm, whether we like it or not.  Things we never knew were possible and things we might have known, but thought it was too amazing to be true.  And since, even though we are humans and will be getting our story from a human sperm, we will even throw in a bit about some of our animal friends for comparison.   So, come and meet the little guy and he will tell you all you need to know!  Enjoy.

Difficulties with sperm procurement can involve biological deficiencies with sperm creation, delivery or both.  The various procedures described in this text are all designed for one purpose: acquisition of as many viable sperm as possible, given initial patient conditions.  Once sperm are collected, a myriad of processing methods are then available to optimize their fertilization potential.  Recent advances have made fertility conditions once deemed hopeless a thing of the past.  Most sterility cases are now either treatable or entirely circumvented through various clinical and laboratory techniques described in this volume, including surgical correction, hormone treatment, and various sperm enhancement technologies.

Interpretation of Semen Analysis Results: A Practical Guide.

R.S. Jeyendran, Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, United Kingdom, 2000

This practical and concise guide provides a step-by-step approach to every aspect of the interpretation of semen analysis results. While other books focus on basic semen analysis protocol and techniques, few books then go on to actually interpret these results and provide useful guidance on the significance of different results for infertility assessment. This guide takes a systematic, hands-on approach to identification of the ranges of abnormality that contribute to male subfertility.

It also defines basic concepts, provides clinically essential reference values, and elucidates the often subtle relationships among many sperm characteristics. Once conclusions are reached, the guide offers recommendations for appropriate referral and additional options. Inclusion of vignettes from a wide range of real-life case reports based on the author's own experiences help to illustrate key points.

This practical guide is an invaluable resource for all clinicians, scientists, and laboratory professionals working with infertile patients.
