INTERPRETATION OF SEMEN ANALYSIS RESULTS: A PRACTICAL GUIDE
by Rajasingam S. Jeyendran, D.V.M., M.S., Ph.D., HCLD.
Many texts describe the process of semen analysis, yet none elucidate the clinical interpretation of analysis results. For the first time, assembled in one easy-to-follow and methodically constructed manual, such interpretation is made available to all.
Considered an invaluable addition to the WHO Laboratory Manual for the Examination of Human Semen and Sperm-Cervical Mucus Interaction, this guide is welcome in every professional's briefcase and within every laboratory bookshelf. Published by Cambridge University Press.
The Laboratory offers three Devices, including the "CentriMot", the Straw Swim-Up Assembly and the Retrograde Sperm Collection Device.
The CentriMot
The "CentriMot" is a patent pending "anti-gravitational" centrifuge. By counteracting gravitational forces during otherwise standard centrifugation, the "CentriMot" is able to maximize recovery of motile spermatozoon.
For scientific details and peer review, see: Increased recovery of swim-up spermatozoa by application of "anti-gravitational" centrifugation. Fertility and Sterility 72: 556-8, 1999.

Straw Swim-Up Assembly
A modification of conventional simple semen incubation techniques, the Straw Swim-Up Assembly allows for six distinct advantages:
1) Incubation can be performed on unprocessed (whole ejaculate) semen;
2) The apparatus and procedure remain inexpensive and simple;
3) Multiple testing can be performed on a single sample;
4) Two properties can be analyzed simultaneously: Migration and Survivability;
5) Results are quantitative; and,
6) Sperm-seminal plasma interaction with media or additive is preserved, allowing for evaluation of potential contraceptive spermicides.

|
Possibilities also abound for the simplication of pre-ICSI sperm selection: Spermatozoon may be allowed to swim directly into the straw filled with PVP media, eliminating the need for any sperm washing and centrifugation. |
|
For technical details and peer review, see: The Straw Swim-Up: A simple method to evaluate the effects of additives, media or toxicant on sperm motility. Fertility Sterility 59: 1322- 1324, 1993

Retrograde Sperm Collection Device
The reusable Retrograde Sperm Collection Device allows for the easy and efficient collection of urine containing retrograde semen flow. Since such retrograde semen flow typically saturates the initial portion of a urine sample, the Collection Device mechanically isolates this first portion to facilitate secondary semen separation and analysis.
Cost: $75 (plus shipping and handling)
